The smaller variant is based on the board game dōbutsu shōgi, invented by Madoka Kitao. Its identical to the game twelve janggi from the Korean tv series The Genius. The larger board variant is based on goro goro shōgi invented by Japan Shogi Association. These games are often used to introduce classic shogi to children.
